On-Campus Experience

Residential and Dining Experience

High school students selected to participate in a residential short-term course will live in one of our on-campus residence halls. All participants will share a room with another high school student in the program. Students will have the ability to select their room through the housing agreement process. Please note: University Residences reserves the right to make adjustments to room assignments as necessary for consolidation or other purposes. More information about the specific residence hall students will be staying in for Summer 2027 will be shared via email by late Spring 2027. All students will be assigned a time to move into the residence hall on the first Sunday of their program between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm.

Your roommate may NOT be someone from your course, but they WILL be another high school student, between the ages of 15 and 17, who is on the same general schedule (as outlined above). Roommates are assigned randomly, and we will not reassign students solely based on course selection/interests. Part of college is being exposed to individuals with different backgrounds and interests than your own, so this experience is meant to mimic that expectation. Students spend very little time in their rooms, and significant roommate conflicts are exceedingly rare in this program. If you do have issues with your roommate, Peer Mentors are staff members who are available to help mediate disputes. Your room number and roommate are not guaranteed until all check-ins are complete! If you want to be paired with a specific roommate, please select the same room on the housing portal. Please come prepared to meet new people and obtain new experiences! 

Linens for residential students will be provided. The linens include:

• Fitted sheet
• Blanket
• Pillow with pillowcase
• Towel
• Washcloth

While a blanket is provided, our team recommends bringing your own blanket, if able, as the rooms tend to get a little chilly!

While on campus, you will enjoy meals in one of our campus dining courts. Students are required to eat their meals at the assigned dining court, which will be announced along with the residence hall by late Spring 2025. If you have food allergies or special dietary needs, please refer to the Allergies and Nutrition website for more information. Students participating in a short-term course will have the following meal schedule:

• Sunday: Dinner only
• Monday through Thursday: Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner
• Friday: Breakfast and Lunch only

 

Supervision on Campus - Peer Mentors

To help you navigate Purdue's campus and learn more about what it is like to be a Purdue student, you will be assigned to a peer mentor group. Peer mentors are current undergraduate Purdue students, and they serve as a program counselor and Purdue ambassador throughout your time on campus. Peer mentors are interviewed, selected, and trained by the Office of Summer and Winter Session staff members. 

Peer Mentor groups will be assigned based on the course you are in. You will be in a group with only students from your course, although your peer mentor(s) may not share your same major/interests. You will spend the majority of the time with the people in this group and in your course. You are encouraged to tell your Peer Mentor or a staff member if you are experiencing issues with the people in your group as soon as possible. 

Students will be supervised at all times on campus. They will not be permitted to leave their Residence Hall or class without a staff member or peer mentor to accompany them. Students will be assigned a peer mentor group with 1-2 peer mentors for a group of 6-12 students. Students will not be permitted to roam campus alone, with only other high school students, nor can they be checked out/picked up by a family member or friend on/near campus. Students must remain on campus under the supervision of the Office of Summer and Winter Sessions staff, peer mentors, and course partners. Failure of students to comply with this rule will result in removal from the program without a warning. 

 

Example Schedule

An example schedule overview for students is as follows:

6:30 am - wake up and prepare for morning activities

7:10 am - 7:30 am - meet your Peer Mentor and group in the lobby and leave for breakfast

7:30 am - 8:15 am - breakfast

8:15 am - 8:30 am - walk to class

8:30 am - 11:30 am - class

11:30 am - 11:45 am - walk to lunch

11:45 am - 12:45 pm - lunch with your peer mentor group

12:45 pm - 1:00 pm - walk to class

1:00 pm - 5:00 pm - class

5:00 pm - 5:15 pm - walk to dinner

5:15 pm - 6:45 pm - dinner with your peer mentor group

6:45 pm - 7:00 pm - walk to evening activities

7:00 pm - 9:00 pm - evening activities with your Peer Mentor Group

9:00 pm - 9:30 pm - curfew check - all students check in to their Residence Hall floors and must remain there for the remainder of the night

9:30 pm - 10:00 pm - students remain on their floors and get ready for bed

10:00 pm - 10:30 pm - all students must be in their rooms and quiet hours will be strictly enforced

 

During your program, you may have opportunities to participate in beloved campus traditions, such as riding on the Boilermaker Special, doing a fountain run, and getting a Den Pop fountain drink.
